keeps the evidence.

CORRELATION, NOT COMMUNICATION

Nothing travels.
Something agrees.

Two minds. One pattern. The story imagines a connection without a message crossing the distance.

Quantum correlations do not allow faster-than-light messaging. The minds and their shared pattern belong to the fiction.

has stopped
asking.

20YEARS

A radio telescope in the West Australian desert has heard the same four minute signal. Nobody has been able to say what it is.

One night, the question becomes impossible to ignore.

01 / WESTERN AUSTRALIA

A father.
A boundary.
A nightly call.

Arjun Bose runs the array. Every night at nine he walks three kilometres beyond the fence to call his eleven year old son.

THE HUMAN DISTANCE
02 / JAPAN & LONDON

Something
opens that
should not.

A contractor dies beside an open cable pit. A physicist in Japan opens a door. In London, a man who has spent thirty years listening begins to get what he wants.

THE DISTURBANCE
03 / 130 LIGHT YEARS AWAY

Two children.
One impossible
pattern.

Neel draws a shape. On the same night, a child a hundred and thirty light years away places six objects on a floor in the same pattern.

KAUSHIK BOSE / AUTHOR

Before the fiction,
there was the frontier.

Kaushik Bose

Author. Project leader. Founder of ATBOSE.
Former SKA-Low infrastructure project manager.

Kaushik’s work has included infrastructure for the world’s largest radio telescope project, consulting to a ministry in Singapore and work with a Crown entity in New Zealand. He works where engineering, institutions and human judgement meet. Quantum Echoes carries those questions into fiction.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR / PREFACE, pp. vi–vii

They are enormous and they are patient and they are, in the end, quite simple: you put a great many ears in a very quiet place, you point them at the sky, and you wait. The difficulty is never the sky. The difficulty is the quiet. To hear something faint from a hundred and thirty light-years away you must first persuade an entire region of your own planet to stop talking, and people, it turns out, would rather do almost anything than stop talking.

So the job is not really astronomy. The job is negotiating with governments, landowners, treasuries, engineers, mining companies, committees and the weather, for twenty years, over an instrument that will not produce a result until most of the people arguing about it have retired. You learn a great deal about human beings that way. You learn that almost nobody in the room is a villain, and that this is not the comfort it sounds like.

That is the thing I could not get out of my head, and it is why this book exists.

“What do you do when everybody meant well?”
